VICS WIN FOUR ON THE TROT IN 8 POINT THRILLER OVER THE ALL STARS
Vics 0.15. 6 (96) to All Stars 2.10. 10 (88)
In front of a crowd of 25,857, the Vics made it four wins on the trot when they triumphed over the All Stars by eight points in the annual Ray White EJ Whitten Legends Game Tuesday night. Vics’ Matthew Lloyd and Brendan Fevola lit up the field with four goals apiece and goals by comedian Dave Hughes in the first and last quarters got the Vics over the line in the hotly contested game.
The All Stars looked to have all the ball and leg speed in the opening quarter with Captain/Coach Shane Crawford kicking a goal within 30 seconds of the opening bounce. This was quickly followed by a magnificent super goal from ex-Hawthorn teammate Michael Osborne. The Vics retaliated with goals to Captain Scott West and Justin Koschitzke. Ex-Melbourne highflier Russell Robertson provided another highlight for the All Stars with a vintage ‘speccy’.
Gold Logie winner Karl Stefanovic was thrust immediately into the deep end by Captain Crawf, starting the game in the ruck opposite the colossal Damian Monkhurst. It was not a goldwinning performance but he did get a few touches and was a crowd favourite.
Special guest Abbey Holmes dusted herself off after a tackle from IBF Middleweight Champion Sam Soliman to finish the first half with three goals to her name. In the final minutes of the first half the crowd was brought to their feet as comedian Dave Hughes found himself on the end of a beautiful pass from teammate Matthew Lloyd and calmly slotted a goal from 30metres. At the half time the All Stars led the Vics by one point.
Fuelled by a passionate half time spray from Coach Rex Hunt, the Vics set the tone early in the second half. In a fiery start to the third quarter, Campbell Brown was reported for striking former teammate Michael Osborne. Osborne got his revenge, however, taking the mark of the night on Brown’s shoulders in the final term. David Rodan thrilled fans by jumping into the crowd to celebrate his final quarter goal.
Other goal kickers on the night included Nathan Eagleton, Ben Graham, Campbell Brown, Nick Daffy and Michael O’Loughlin who benefited from some fancy footwork by ‘The Wizard’ Jeff Farmer.
The All Stars threatened to pull off an upset with a Sam Lonergan super goal drawing them within a kick in the final minutes. The Vics were forced to look to an unlikely saviour with Hughesy’s second goal sealing the game for the Big V.
The match featured the continuation of the battle between Victorian spearheads Matthew Lloyd and Brendan Fevola, which has been brewing for the last two years. Although Fev kicked for four goals, one of which was a pearler out of mid-air, it was Lloyd who won the battle, claiming his second consecutive man of the match honour.
Embodying everything the late, great EJ loved – entertainment, footy and in particular state of origin footy- the 2014 Ray White EJ Whitten Legends Game turned on four quarters of pure entertainment. The game shone the spotlight on mens health issues particularly prostate cancer in support of the EJ Whitten Foundation.
