Legends Game Draws Record Crowd!

All Stars 2.11.7 (91) def. Victoria 0.12.12 (84)

A record crowd of 25,347 people braved the cold at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday 6 July to cheer on AFL’s greatest names in the 2010 Ray White EJ Whitten Legends Game.

Kicking off at 7.30pm, this year’s game proved to be another close one, with the All Stars streaming home in the final quarter to beat Victoria by 7 points.

The All Stars dominated the first quarter, with two goals by Demon great, Russell Robertson and a nine point super goal from outside 40m by Byron Pickett. Tony Liberatore and Play in the Game winner, Rusty McDonnell from Kyabram kept Victoria’s hopes alive, with the Big V trailing by 3 points at the first break.

In the second quarter Sam Newman lined up against 74-year-old Cobber Rogers and after some early fumbles, picked up form to kick a total of four goals for the Big V and take home the Sebel Citigate Man of the Match. Shaun Smith and Tony Modra looked dangerous for the All Stars, both picking up a goal before half time.

After a thrilling acrobatic performance by the Stunt Footy Road Show at half time, the Big V turned up the heat in the third quarter, with two goals from Newman, a near miss from David Neitz and a nice assist from superstar in waiting, Bryan Strauchan.

While Victoria tried valiantly to even the score in the final quarter, the All Stars were too strong, with handy play from top jockey, Craig ‘Froggy’ Newitt and another goal from Russell Robertson.
